Monitors/Screens

CRT-style TV and computer monitors emit 95% of their energy in the radio-frequency range. The monitor image is produced by electrons hitting the fluorescent display, whereby the electrons have been accelerated by voltages from 15 to 30 kV.

The resulting field strengths at 30 cm distance range from a few V/m to 10 V/m. Nearly all CRT computer monitors comply with the Swedish TCO standard and therefore are considered low-emission.

Modern flat screens for computers hardly emit any radiation. TVs usually emit higher levels of radiation than computer screens; however, this is offset by the larger distance between the TV set and the viewer. In the case of laptops and notebooks, lower emissions are only achieved during battery mode or if the power cord is grounded (three-pin plug). Two-pin plugs make for much higher electrical field exposures.

Like any other electrical appliance, TVs as well as computers do emit alternating electrical fields from their power cords-even when switched off. The electrical and magnetic field emissions of computer monitors can vary greatly. Flat screens do not generally emit less radiation than CRT monitors.

Computer screens should comply with the Swedish standard for low-emission monitors. Apart from ergonomic and ecological criteria, the alternating electrical and magnetic field emissions must not exceed certain threshold values.

The TCO sticker is located on the back of the device or in the top-right corner of the screen.

TVs often emit high levels of electrical and magnetic fields. One possibility is to use a TCO-certified computer screen with integrated TV functions. To be on the safe side, always keep a greater distance to TVs.
